Dolphins Add American Import Alli Gloyd

 In News, QBL

THE Subway Cairns Dolphins are pleased to welcome American forward Alli Gloyd to their roster, who will join the squad ahead of their road trip to the Sunshine Coast this weekend.

The 185cm Arizonian comes to Cairns after a stint in Germany, playing with the Wolfpack Wolfenbuettel in the Bundesliga League.

Dolphins Head Coach Mark Worthington said he was keen to get Gloyd in his line-up after a challenging start to his QBL season.

“She’s just finished her stint in Germany where she averaged about 12 points and 14 rebounds a game. She’s a really athletic player, great defender and adds some length to our group” he said.

Gloyd attended Mesa Community College from 2010-2012, where she played for the Thunderbirds and helped the team to a 27-8 record, before transferring to the University of Arizona.

Playing with the Wildcats, she averaged 9.4 points and 6.0 rebounds as a junior, before tearing her ACL and taking a redshirt year as a senior.

As a redshirt senior, she started all 30 games, averaging 5.1 points and 5.3 rebounds after suffering a torn ACL in her senior year. She collected a total of 160 rebounds in her last year, second-best for the university.

“I actually found out about her when I was enquiring about Ify Ibekwe [sister of former NBL player, Ekene Ibekwe] who has played for the SEQ Stars in the WNBL. She got the last roster spot with the LA Sparks in the WNBA this year, but she pointed me in Alli’s direction,” explained Worthington.

“I watched some film and I was really happy with what I saw and thought she could bring an extra dimension to our group, especially on the defensive end.”

Gloyd joins the Subway Cairns Dolphins this week, and will make her debut in a double-header on the weekend as the team travels to the Sunshine Coast, facing the Clippers and USC Rip City.

This is not her first stint in Australia, having played with the Mildura Heat in the Big V competition last year, helping them advance to the semi-finals.

Gloyd will play her first home game at Cairns Basketball at 6:00pm on Saturday 3 June against the Ipswich Force.
