Cairns Basketball is the most northern major association in Queensland and we aim to be the best in all aspects of the game. Some of our recent success includes:

  • 2016 QBL Mens Champions
  • Awarded the 2016 Vince Hickey Trophy which goes to the overall champion association based on State Championship results
  • Sixteen (16) players were selected for State Teams   
  • Fifteen (15) players were selected for State Emerging Teams
  • Eight (8) players were selected for Basketball Queenslands Future Development Program
  • Five (5) referees were appointed to medal games at Basketball Queensland State Championships
  • Three (3) players were selected for Basketball Australia’s National Development Camp
  • One (1) player was selected for U17 National Mens Team
  • Former Cairns Junior Aron Baynes represented Australia at the Olympics
  • Steady growth with participation numbers in local competitions and programs

Meet Our Team

  • Mike Scott
    Mike Scott GENERAL MANAGER

    Mike joined Cairns Basketball in 2003 and is the current General Manager.

    He has been involved in the sport for more than 40 years as a coach, manager, official and is a self-proclaimed veteran having played approximately 2500 games of domestic basketball.

    Prior to working for Cairns Basketball, Mike worked in the Cairns Taxi Industry for 13 years and served as a Retail Banker in Melbourne for 22 years.

    Mike has also been involved as a volunteer for various AFL and Basketball Clubs, holding down positions from Property Steward to President.

  • Nic Martin
    Nic Martin DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

    Nic joined Cairns Basketball as the Development Manager in 2015.

    He has a wide range of Basketball experience having played, coached and officiated at a high level.

    Nic has had great success coaching at the representative level having won 4 State Championships and winning a Bronze Medal at the 2015 U14 National Championships.

    Nic has also been actively involved with the Cairns Taipans as a Development Coach and with Queensland State Teams as an Assistant Coach.

  • Chantele Van Bael
    Chantele Van Bael OFFICE MANAGER

    Chantele joined Cairns Basketball as the Office Manager in 2014.

    She has been involved at Cairns Basketball in some shape or form for more than 40 years having played, coached and volunteered at the junior level.

    Chantele played 10 years for the Cairns Dolphins (formerly know as the Lady Marlins) in the Women’s State League, having won the State Championship in 1994.

    Prior to working for Cairns Basketball, Chantele worked as a Public Servant (various roles ranging from Finance, HR & Procurement) for 30 years.

  • Michele Dutton
    Michele Dutton SENIOR COMPETITIONS CO-ORDINATOR

    Michele joined Cairns Basketball as the Senior Competitions Coordinator in 2011.

    She juggles her schedule, also serving as Store Manager at Olly’s Friendly Grocer.

    Michele has been a volunteer at Cairns Basketball since 1992 and has experience as a player and coach.

    Outside of basketball, Michele played hockey for 11 years and was selected for the NT State Team.
